Total engine failure on Vectra VXR

My much-loved 2007 Vauxhall Vectra VXR estate has just suffered (according to Vauxhall franchise) 'total engine failure' at 55,000 miles. Timing chain broken, crankshaft won't turn, valves bent, etc. Quoted price for fitted exchange engine (with two-year warranty) is near £6000. Bought the car, owned by Vauxhall, at one-year-old, with 20k. Since been serviced on time (and very well) by same excellent garage.

Stupidly I had no independent warranty. But, should a 2.8 V6 highly-praised engine 'go' at a relatively small mileage without (I promise) being overtaxed in its life? Should I ask Vauxhall for some financial contribution? Or do I just put it down to bad luck and pay up - or have it rebuilt at a reputable tuning shop?

That's very bad luck. But it is a turbocharged engine, so if the oil was not changed every 5,000 miles or so and synthetic oil used and the engine simmered before switching off then some of the oil could have carbonised and clocked the oilways to the timing chain tensioner.

Far better than previous Vectra. Now with decent handling and an excellent ride. Plenty of safety kit. Roomy in the front. Big boot. Good looks.
