Noisy Fiat gearbox

Our 2010 Grande Punto 1.4, done 22k, has gone into Fiat main dealer for gearbox whine. They have agreed the noise and stripped the box to investigate under third year warranty. They have decided to fit "new gearbox" but say the original gearbox has already been refitted, as bolts have been reused and there is other evidence of re-use.

They also say that the "new" gearbox, which they have ordered from Italy will be reconditioned, as Fiat have a policy of using recon parts for warranty work. I am astounded that a brand new car has been sold with a re-fitted gearbox, and that following problems, will be replaced by another rebuilt gearbox. I would be grateful for your thoughts and suggestions on what action to take.

We purchased the car new and can confirm it has never had any gearbox work to date.

It's not uncommon for FIAT gearboxes to whine sometimes and not others. Mine does. But FIAT's policy is no different from other manufacturers. Gearbox quality in small European cars is less hit and miss than it sued to be but is still hit and miss. You don't escape from this with a VAG car.
