When did Mercedes-Benz quality improve after the dip?

A correspondent recently wrote to you concerning the purchase of a used 2002 Mercedes S Class, both front wings of which began to bubble with rust in 2006, with the same problem occurring in 2008 on the front doors and around the sunroof. You wrote that MB cut quality around this time.

Has quality since improved and when? I am considering purchasing a Mercedes CLS Diesel, model year 2005 or 2006, which I would keep for many years, in preference to other ‘quality badged’ alternatives. In the light of the above would this be a wise choice? Has MB improved quality, and when do you think this occurred?

The bad times were about 1996 to about 2004. Since then there has been a huge improvement in quality. I have not heard of the rust problem afflicting the CLS at all. Great looking car. But be prepared to bump your head a few times getting in.
