Service history from garages

Last week I took my car for a service at a BMW main dealer. The dealer damaged the car while it was being serviced (slammed the bonnet onto a spanner apparently), and held onto it for an extra couple of days to get it repaired (free of charge).

The repair looks fine to me, but I expected to receive some documentation for 'service history'/warranty purposes. I was told the service manager would provide something that day, but they have not done so, and seem extremely cagey about providing anything to me at all in writing. Is this common practice, am I expecting too much to get proper paperwork for the repair?

I think it would be unusual, but you can demand it in writing to the dealer principal, sent by post office special delivery so it is a matter of record.
