Left hand drive car to use in France

We have bought a house in France with a garage and wish to keep a small car (about 1200cc) there which can take four adults.

We thought left-hand drive would be useful. With a budget of about £4000 what car do you recommend and what tips do you have on buying/registering it in UK or France, insuring it and on maintenance and care? It may occasionally go unused for as long as six weeks.

Be easier, but more expensive, to buy the car in France. You don't need a diesel for occasional use. Probably better a French make with a local dealer. Renault Clio, Citroen C3, Peugeot 207.
