BMW X3 handbrake

Can you give me your opinion of the new BMW X3s Handbrake operation. As it is a button do you think its a good idea, but above all is it safe.

I've only ever driven one 1,000 miles in the snow. Had no problems, even coming out to the car covered in ice at about 13 below 0.
