Expensive repairs after a short time

We bought a second hand Audi A3 (2006/56 plate, diesel, 92k) from a garage at the price of £7,500 (the price had been dropped from £7,995 that weekend as they were having a "Sale").

We were given a 3 month warranty but shortly after the warranty expired the car would not start.

We had to call our insurance company to tow the vehicle to Audi (the garage we bought it from is 65 miles away). The tandem fuel pumps had gone and were leaking oil into the engine. We ended up with a bill for £900. I use the car for work and had driven about 2,000 miles in this time.

Looking at the last MOT an advisory note was issued but we weren't given this with the paperwork or advised of any problems. Do I have any legal rights to go back to the garage I bought it from and to claim back some of the cost of the repairs?

You should have referred it back to the supplying dealer. You don't now have a clearcut 'right' but see the McGrath case history in this link: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/
