I want a small, frugal car with good boot space that is fun to drive, what are my options?

I'm on my second Panda, now 15 years old. I really like it but time to change, what was good, 1.3 diesel power, suprising amount of fun and decent handling, what is bad, fold down rear seats, no flat load space. I've been retired for years and need to save dosh so the nice but impracticle SLK must go too and I need a small replacement with good tax and insurance rates but room for golf clubs, flat load space and fun to drive. Oh and cruise control, not averse to automatic. Suggestions?

We would suggest the Honda Jazz, which is compact but has excellent space efficiency, is cheap to run and available with cruise control and automatic. It is less strong on the fun to drive aspect however. As an alternative you could look at the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, which is a little bigger than the Jazz but has plenty of space, is fun to drive and can be had with a range of frugal petrol and diesel engines.
