When does a 1984 classic car become tax exempt?

I've been offered a Mercedes saloon first registered May 2nd 1984, the owner reckons it'll be tax exempt 7 months from now, but from reading bits and pieces I don't think it'll become tax exempt until after April 2025, can you give me an exact date please?

You are correct in that this car will not be eligible for VED exemption until April 2025. Although the car turns 40 years old in May 2024, you need to continue to pay tax until the April following its 40th birthday.
