If I transfer my private plate to a car that already has one, do I automatically keep the old plate?

I have a private reg that I would like to put on a car which already has a private plate on it. When I put my private plate on it will the other private plate be assigned to me on retention?

The existing private plate will not be transferred to you automatically, you need to apply to keep it on retention at the same time as you transfer your existing private plate on to the vehicle. You can read more information about this on the government's website here: www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbe...n
