Can I sell my car privately during lockdown?

Can I legally sell a car privately during lockdown if social distancing? Can I let the potential buyer test drive the car if I sit in the nearside back seat diagonally away from the driver and wear a mask? Alternatively, I could let the buyer drive the car alone if I hold onto their car and car keys when they come to view the car. What's your advice? Thank you for your help.

It's a bit of a grey area technically because I believe Government guidance does not explicitly mention private car sales at this time, though we recommend staying at home unless it's necessary to undertake something that's permitted. Generally, the guidelines and the law surrounding lockdown only permit businesses that sell goods to operate delivery and Click&Collect services, i.e. "These venues can continue to be able to operate click-and-collect (where goods are pre-ordered and collected without entering the premises) and delivery services." Having a stranger round to test drive a car that they might not buy would almost certainly break the lockdown rules.

The police pulled a driver over for this very reason recently - as reported by Car Dealer Magazine. A spokesperson for the Central Motorway Police Group said: ‘While it is not necessarily a breach of Covid-19 rules to buy a replacement vehicle if required for essential travel, a car swap is not deemed appropriate during the current lockdown restrictions where essential travel only is permitted.’

As for the test drives, no - you can't possibly be as far away from a buyer as you'd need to be by being in the backseat with a mask on. I recommend you wait until lockdown is over, you'll likely attract more attention to your car then anyway.
