Utterly beautiful looking car with faultless lines. Better to drive than a 406.
Quality problems. Doors can rust and break where the mirrors fit.

Jawdropping Pininfarina styling. One of the best looking cars in the world. Better looking than more expensive Volvo C70 and Mercedes CLK. A truly beautiful car. Plenty of room for four passengers....

Introduction

Launched in 1997, the Peugeot 406 Coupe was styled by Pininfarina. It looked fantastic then, and the baby Ferrari 465GT design has definitely aged well.

Two engines were available from launch – a 2.0-litre petrol and a 3.0-litre V6. The range-topping SE trim got all the toys as well as leather trim, and is definitely the one to go for today. If you’re planning to do high-mileages in it, then a 2.2-litre HDi diesel went on sale in 2001.

Prices started at £20k new, pitching it against the Alfa GTV and Honda Prelude, but the good-looking French car was more refined and spacious. Handling was good, as was ride quality – perhaps the main criticism was that the 406 Coupe just wasn’t sporty enough.

You can get into one these days from £500, while spending a bit more will get you a very good example indeed. Whichever one you buy, check for rust and make sure the electrics work.
