MG goes back to the future
8 January 2002
The first major revamp of the MG sports car since 1995 is being unveiled at the Brussels motor show. Manufactured at Rover's giant Longbridge plant in Birmingham, the new car is called the MGTF.
With the top rated model - the 1.8 litre TF160 - capable of 140mph, the company hopes to consolidate the marque's position as the UK's top selling sports car of the last six years. Rob Oldaker, product development director, said: "The MGF has proved to be an amazing success and the new TF will retain MG's sales pole position."
A total of 40,000 MGF's have been sold in the UK since its launch in 1995. Prices are expected to start at around £15,000. The MGTF name has been used once before on a car launched in 1953.
