Jaguar Idle for a Week

Jaguar Ltd. has shut its automobile production line for a week because of slumping demand, the company said today. Jaguar idled 2,200 of its production staff of 3,500 in its Birmingham and Coventry plants.

The workers will draw 80 percent pay while not working. "They are laid off for just this week," said Colin Cook, Jaguar corporate affairs manager. Earlier this month, Jaguar, a subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company, reported that it sold 39,725 cars in 1995, a 30 percent increase over the previous year.
