NEW CARS PILE UP IN ROVER STRIKE
More than 2,500 new Rovers are baking in the sun at a long-term car parkcreated by strikers. The cars, worth £26 million, have been standing idle for five weeks in a row over sackings. A 24-hour, picket has prevented delivery drivers taking any from the 32-acre open air site at Milton, near Didcot, Oxfordshire.
The centre normally distributes all Rover's models to London and the South East. But now replacements are being shipped hundreds of extra miles from a strike-free depot in Ely, Cambridgeshire. The dispute began when Liverpool-based Mainland Car Deliveries sacked nine staff from their Oxfordshire depot.
Union officials claim they were dismissed as part of a cost-cutting drive.Twenty eight fellow workers at Milton came out on strike to get them reinstated and were also fired. They have been manning pickets ever since. Rover claim the strike has not affected distribution.
