The General Motors Corporation said today that talks had broken down with the British Government on the purchase of Land Rover and the trucks division of BL P.L.C., the former British Leyland.
Britain said Saturday that it had abandoned negotiations with G.M. on the proposed sale of Land Rover, which had drawn sharp criticism from both members of the ruling Conservative Party and the opposition.
A G.M. spokesman said the company's negotiators had returned to the United States to consider the situation. It was not known when they would return, he said.
''For the moment the whole thing has been aborted until something else happens,'' a senior spokesman said. The negotiations collapsed because the British Government had withdrawn the Land Rover part of the deal, he said. G.M. had been eager to acquire Land Rover, which is famous for its rough country vehicles.
The Government has been under pressure to keep the state-run BL P.L.C. in British hands.
