Management to meet Jaguar stewards today

The management of Jaguar is meeting 50 shop stewards today to try to settle a strike by 1,800 employees, which has stopped all car assembly work at the Coventry plants for the past fortnight. Mr Raymond Horrocks, BL Cars' managing director, has told the strikers that unless they report for work on Monday, they will be dismissed.
The meeting comes after three hours of informal talks yesterday. Both parties reported that some progress had been made. It is understood that Mr John Egan, the newly appointed chairman of Jaguar, has promised that if the men return, he will hold joint talks about their complaints of down- grading, fears that Jaguar is losing its special status within BL, and the removal of production difficulties.
