Inter-union dispute halts Leyland plant at Llanelli

4 December 1973

A strike yesterday brought production to a standstill at the car body factory at Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, of British Leyland. More than 1,000 production workers, are involved. The management says that the dispute is an inter-union affair.

It concerns the proposed transfer of a train driver to another job. A spokesman for the Transport and General Workers' Union, whose members are on strike with members of the National Union of Vehicle Builders, said promotion was the issue. An official of the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers said the Proposed transfer complied with a long standing agreement between the union and management.

The Llanelli factory produces a wide range of light pressings for Austin-Morris assembly plants at Longbridge and Cowley.
