Truck and bus strike

In Lancashire more than 8,500 workers at British Leyland's five bus and lorry plants at Leyland and Chorley began an all-out strike yesterday after a mass meeting. Plant level pay negotiations have broken down because shop-floor representatives have rejected a management offer, within the £1 plus 4 per cent government formula, as the price of eliminating the piece-work system and introducing a new wages structure.

They have demanded instead a substantial wage increase under the present system. All five plants, which are among the biggest revenue earners in the BLMC group, are at a standstill because of the strike by production workers. They are protesting because 139 men were laid off by the management after 58 engine assemblers struck in support of the pay demand.
