Work starts on Jaguar plant extension in first step to boost output

British Leyland have started Work on a major expansion of Jaguar's assembly plant at Coventry which will increase production from 850 cars a week to 1,400. Mr F. R. W. England, Jaguar's chief executive, said last night: "We are currently undertaking new building and planning work at Browns Lane which is the first stage in our long-term programme to increase production of Jaguar cars to 1,400 a week."
The programme has been so planned that the increases will take place progressively and without disruption. Jaguar have already invested £3m in a highly automated line to build the new 12 cylinder engine which powers the XJ12 and E-type sports car. This line is capable of producing 1,000 engines a week in addition to a similar line with an equal output of six cylinder engines.
The urgent need is therefore for considerably enlarged car assembly lines to take advantage of this substantial increase in engine capacity and these are now being provided at. Browns Lane.
