Promotions among top BLMC echelons

British Leyland's recent management reorganization gathered pace yesterday. A number of new appointments will enable Mr George Turnbull, managing director of the Austin-Morris car division, to devote more time to corporate matters. He is now considered by many to be the leading contender for the post of chief executive Lord Stokes at present combines with that of chairman.

Mr Turnbull's rival for one of the most important roles in the British motor industry is Mr John Barber. group finance and planning director. who on Wednesday became head of British Leyland International. The latest appointments were highlighted in yesterday's issue of the Austin-Morris Express, an internal newspaper. The most significant is the promotion of a former Ford finance expert, Mr David Andrews. 39, to deputize for Mr Turnbull when he is absent.

Mr Brian Lancaster, 40, director of industrial engineering at Austin- Morris, relieves Mr Turnbull of his corporate responsibilities for industrial engineering, The surprise appointment is that of Mr George King. the present director of production control, as director manufacturing, lorry and bus division.
