3,000 idle as disputes hit British Levland

20 May 1972

Three thousand British Leyland workers were idle at two of the group's plants in Birmingham last night with production severely interrupted as fresh strikes added to the toll of recent months. In addition 2,000 employees at Jaguar, Coventry, have given formal notice of intention to strike on June 1st following rejection of their claim for more money and shorter hours.

The two plants affected yesterday were Austin-Morris, Longbridge, and the light commercial vehicle works at Adderley Park East. At Longbridge 360 engine inspectors walked out after a dispute over work measurement. The strike stopped production of engines for the Mini, 1100, 1300 and Marina 1.3.

A further 2,300 workers were laid off. About 350 men on strike at Adderley Park East are protesting at company plans to close the plant and move the work elsewhere.
