Power Cuts Lead To Mass Lay-Offs

British Leyland continued yesterday to be the worst affected group in the motor car sector, with more than 37,000 workers laid off out of a work force of 135,000.
In BLMC's Austin-Morris group of factories 17,000 employees were not at their jobs, including 7,800 at Longbridge, Birmingham, where no cars were built during the day. Production is expected to start at the works this morning with the return of assembly workers from a pay claim strike.
About 2,700 workers at Castle Bromwich should also arrive back today. At Cowley 2,250- employees were laid off, affecting production of Maxi and Marina models.
Triumph reported that of the 8,000 men employed at Coventry , 3000 are being laid off each day on a rota basis. The Rover Company's lay-off total doubled to 4,000 with the shut down of production at Solihull. The whole of Jaguar's work force of 6,000 was laid off.
In BLMC's truck and bus division, Leyland is laying off about half of its workers each day, affecting 4,000 people.
