Lay-offs at BLMC now total 8,000

More car workers were laid off yesterday at British Leyland's Longbridge, Birmingham, plant following the breakdown of talks to settle the week old strike by 1,000 assembly workers. Last night the total number of employees idle was approaching 8,000. Talks lasting more than eight hours broke down on Thursday night.
So far the strike has cost the company an estimated £4.5m- worth of production. The strikers have refused an interim wage offer of £3 a week because it is conditional on their acceptance of a flat rate payment system in place of piecework. As a result, 4,600 are laid off at Longbridge and more than 2,000 at the Castle Bromwich plant.
