BLMC stoppages

All production of Jaguar Cars in Coventry was halted yesterday and more than 2,000 workers made idle by a fresh walkout of clerical staff at the Browns Lane plant over a pay dispute. The layoffs are for an indefinite period. The 350 clerical workers involved are not due to meet again until Thursday. About 500 clerical staff at Jaguar stopped work at the start of last week but they went back on Thursday to allow fresh talks to begin.

At Longbridge, day long talks on pay at the British Leyland Austin- Morris plant ended with no settlement being reached. About 4,300 workers are idle. Production of Mini and 1800 cars was at a standstill because of a strike by 450 final assembly workers.
In Liverpool the 100 Triumph car workers whose strike, which began last Thursday, stopped production of Toledo cars, and disrupted output of other models, voted yesterday to return to work today.

Other motor industry strikes which ended yesterday include one by 300 workers from the British Leyland light commercial vehicle plant at Adderley Park, Birmingham. Normal working was resumed too by the 1,700 Rover engine and transmission workers who had banned overtime and held one-day stoppages over the past three weeks.
