100,000 IDLE IN CAR TRADE

British Leyland also suffered heavy lay-offs, and the group estimated that 60,000 of its 130,000 employees were unable to work yesterday. Of the total, 31,000 were in factories of the groups popular car division, at Birmingham and Cowley. The other lay-offs included 5,900 at Rover plants, 6,000 at Jaguar, 5,500 at Triumph (Coventry and Merseyside), and 8,000 in the truck and bus factories in Lancashire.
