Triumph lay-offs
9 September 1971
By R. W. Shakespeare
Northern Industrial Correspondent
About 2000 workers at British Leyland's Triumph car plant at Coventry are being laid off today and the progressive lay-off of the remaining 7000 will follow unless a pay dispute involving engine assembly workers is resolved. The dispute is affecting production of a Triumph car shortly to be launched.
The company has also said that output of the Toledo car at its Merseyside plant may be affected. At the Coventry factory, 1,600 car assembly workers had to be laid off on Monday, with the loss of 450 cars, to relieve congestion in the assembly areas resulting from a "work to rule" by the engine workers.
The dispute is over piecework rates.
