300 Maintenance engineers have been on strike for three weeks at Lucas car component factories in the Birmingham area. As a result 13,000 Lucas workers are laid off. British Leyland is making Marinas and Maxis without windscreen wiper motors.
The second dispute involves 400 engine assemblers striking over a pay rise offered for working on Triumph's new Dolomite model. Already 4,000 other workers are idle, and most of the remaining 5,000 production workers at the Coventry plant are expected to join them. Lay-offs resulting from the dispute are expected to spread progressively through Triumph's 2,800 workers at Speke, Liverpool, during the day.
Work on the Triumph 1500 and the TR6 sports car is already affected and the Toledo will be effected on Wednesday. The Speke workers are to go on holiday next week.
There is one bright spot on the horizon----men at the Austin Morris works at Longbridge, Birmingham, expect to resume work today on the Mini, 1100 and 1300 lines after a weekend lay-off through a shortage of engines.
