Lucas strike ends

Nine Lucas factories in Birmingham were back in production yesterday after a strike lasting almost a month.
Four thousand men returned to work at the Triumph motors factory in Coventry yesterday after a piecework dispute involving 400 engine fitters had been settled. But production will not return to normal until after a weeks holiday which starts tomorrow. About 1,500 assembly workers are still laid off.
At Jaguar Cars Coventry works 1,000 employees were laid off at lunchtime yesterday, stopping production of the XJ6 and Daimler Sovereign saloon. The lay-offs came after a walk-out by a group of axle assembly workers, who had complained about the company's recent policy on lay-offs. A company spokesman said those laid off had been asked to report back today, when there would be a review of working arrangements.
