Leyland labour troubles ease with end of strikes at three plants

21 October 1970

British Leyland's labour troubles eased yesterday with the ending of three strikes that have been hitting production at the company's Midlands and Scottish plants.

At the Austin-Morris factory at Longbridge, Birmingham, 520 engine assemblers who had -been on strike since Friday over a manning dispute, agreed to return to work after a promise of further negotiations with the management. Their stoppage had halted the production of engines for minis and medium range cars and threatened to cause heavy lay-offs among assembly workers.

At the company's plant at Bathgate, West Lothian, nearly 1000 men who were idle on Monday returned to work yesterday. A strike by 40 engineering inspectors over a pay a dispute had caused the lay off of 950 other workers. At Cowley, Oxford, Austin- Morris car production was fully resumed - following the strike' started on Friday by 170 workers in the paint shop.

Their pay claim is being taken through the engineering industry disputes procedure.
