8500 hit by car strike

A series of strikes hit the motor industry yesterday, causing about 8,500 men to be laid off in five factories. The most serious was a dispute in which electricians and pattern makers withdrew their labour at the Pressed Steel Fisher company's factory at Cowley, Oxford.
This led to 3,000 men being sent home at Cowley. Another 3,000 men employed on car assembly and allied operations at the Rootes factories at Ryton and Stoke, Warwickshire, and a further 1,000 men at the Rover factory at Solihull, Birmingham, were affected.
