Car Body Strike Ends

16 October 1963

The strike of 800 men at Fisher and Ludlow Ltd., Birmingham, which laid off 8,000 workers in Birmingham and Cowley, ended last night. The strikers returned to work on the night shift so that discussions could be held with the management.

The dispute, which started on Thursday, was between four unions about who should be employed in an experimental metal- dipping plant at Fisher and Ludlows, which makes car-bodies for British Motor Corporation assembly plants.

At Oxford, however, the 1,250 workers on strike at the Morris radiators branch voted yesterday to stay out. The stoppage started about a week ago because a man was transferred between departments in the factory.
