Lorry Styled By Car Designer

26 April 1963

FROM OUR MOTORING CORRESPONDENT

Michelotti of Turin, designer of the Triumph Herald and Spitfire bodies has turned his talent to heavier vehicles.

He has been employed by Scammell, a member of the Leyland Motor Corporation, to style the cab of their new 24-ton Routeman Mk 11. The first production model of a British heavy lorry to be styled by one of -the world's leading car designers meets the growing demand for driver comfort and a good-looking external line. Michellotti has given the new truck a wide, low look, with twin headlamps.

The cab, moulded from fire-resistant glass fibre, has a panoramic windscreen, insulation against heat and cold, lockable glove boxes and coat hooks. The Routeman Mk. 11 is an eight- wheeler, fitted with a Leyland diesel engine, giving 150 b.h.p., and has power- assisted steering and air operated brakes on all wheels.
