Thousands Sent Home Because Of Snow
1 January 1963
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
OXFORD, JAN. 1
Thousands of workers in the Oxford area were sent home by their employers today because of the weather.
The Pressed Steel Co., at Cowley, sent home 1,500' workers because lorries travelling between the car factories at Cowley and the Midlands were held up on snow-blocked roads. Morris Motors sent workers home at midday because car bodies were unable to get through to the factory from the Pressed Steel Co. at Swindon. Snow prevented most of the manual workers at Smiths Motor Accessories, at Witney, from getting to work, and at the M.G. Car Company at Abingdon three out of five assembly lines ran until 4 p.m., when the factory closed.
