Car Workers Fined For Not Striking

24 August 1959

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
OXFORD, AUG. 23

Fines of £2 are to be imposed on members of the Transport and General Workers' Union at Oxford who worked at the Cowley factory of Morris Motors, Ltd., during the strike over the dismissal of a chief shop steward, Mr F. Horsman.

The decision, taken at a meeting of the Morris Motors branch of the union, was disclosed yesterday. Members fined can appeal to the branch committee. A few men worked throughout the strike, which lasted for 10 working days. One of them said that he earned over £30, considerably more than the strike pay. Mr Horsman is to begin work tomorrow at the Pressed Steel Co. factory near by. The Oxford branch of the National Union of Vehicle Builders last week deferred a decision on fining members who defied the strike call.
