Why won't my 944 start?

My 1986 Porsche 944 has been standing all through the winter. I reconnected a fully charged battery and tried to start it but the revs drop and then the engine cuts out. Do you know what the problem may be?

Most probably a fuel filter blocked with emulsified petrol and other contaminants from the tank.
