Diesel or Petrol?

Our three-year-old A160 petrol is coming to the end of its contract, and we've been offered a diesel version at a very good price on the same finance basis.

The current commute is about 85 miles per day (mainly all fast A road), but we're not sure about any cost benefits bearing in mind the extra price of diesel. Any advice regarding petrol/diesel mpg figures gratefully received.

Diesels are usually cheaper to run for the first 3 years, but then can suffer catastrophic repair bills during years 3 - 6.
