We’ve brought you the 20 most endangered cars in the UK – cars that were once common and are now very rare indeed – but what cars from the 1980s are rarest, full stop? We’ve had a look at the DVLA records to find out – the list below covers cars registered between 1980-'89.

Saab 9000 – 120 still licenced

The 9000 shared its underpinnings with the Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma and Alfa Romeo 164. It remained in production from 1985 through to 1998, but few 80s cars remain thanks to expensive repairs – it was cheaper to scrap them than to keep them running.

An omission is the FSO Polonez, introduced in the late 1970s and sold until the early 1990s. A much maligned car, but it gave me many thousands of (almost) trouble free motoring, including trips to the GDR.
