Top 10: Most expensive classic cars at auction

Fangio's Mercedes-Benz W196 Formula 1 car is the most expensive car to be sold at auction, making an astonishing £19,601,500. But snapping hard at its heels in the new number two position is the one-of-10 Ferrari 275 NART Spider, which sold at RM Auctions at Monterey for almost £17.5m.

The Mercedes-Benz 540K is undoubtedly one of the beautiful and imposing of all pre-war cars, and is both fantastically rare and super-expensive. When it appeared on the lot list for Pebble Beach, it was marked down as a potential record breaker, and true to form, one of the world's most spectacular cars did the business during the world's best classic car event. It's a Pebble Beach Concours winner, had three owners in 76 years, and was topped-off by a special body by Sindelfingen. A true winner.
