Top 10: Most expensive cars sold at the Race Retro auction

Silverstone Auctions boasted a successful Race Retro Sale with celebrity cars attracting bidders from around the world at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire over the weekend of 23-25 February.

Friday’s Competition Car Sale achieved a 63%, followed by the Classic Car Sale on Saturday where 70% of lots were sold, lifting the overall sales total to £3.7m. Here are the ten most expensive lots from the classic car sale.

1972 BMW 3.0 CSL

The European Touring Car Championship of the early 1970s encouraged several manufacturers to build some exciting 'homologation specials' - not least BMW with its Coupé Sport Leicht or CSL. How light? A diet of aluminium bonnet, boot and doors, reduced trim and lighter sports seats shed 300lbs (136kgs). Slimmer of the year, indeed.

This right-hand drive, 3.0 CSL has been well cared for and looks great in Taiga Green paintwork. The engine, gearbox, and clutch were overhauled and ‘Emerald’ fuel injection system was fitted along with an ‘Alpina’ air-box and suspension modifications.
