Top 10: £2000 coupes to buy in 2021

Just because your budget is tight doesn’t mean your next classic car should in any way lack style. The 1980s and ’90s saw some particularly interesting – and downright gorgeous – coupes launched, many of which can be snapped up now for relatively little cash. And even the ’70s still offers us a few cut-price gems. So the big question is: which one will you choose?

Volkswagen Scirocco MkII

Values of the best have increased but it’s still possible to pick up a good example of the second-generation Scirocco for £2000 – and it makes sense. Launched in 1981, the MkII lacked the sharp lines of the original but was still a smart choice, even if not all versions were quick.

The lowliest models offered as little as 70bhp, though the (1982-88) 1.8 GTi managed a far healthier 112bhp, while a twin-cam 1.8-litre derivative (not to be confused with that single-cam 1.8) managed a whopping 139bhp in standard guise. The final car rolled off the line in 1992.
