Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet (1965 – 1975) Review

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet (1965 – 1975) At A Glance

4/5

+Imposing, elegant, and very cool

-If you want a Cabriolet, be prepared to pay through the nose

As well being offered in saloon form with two wheelbases, the W108/W109 S-Class was offered in W111 Coupe form. It was actually a heavily revised version of the previous Fintail coupes, helped in no small part by the fitment of the 2.5-litre straight-six from the 250S/SE. Other improvements included rear disc brakes and an rise in equipment level. The elegant pillarless 250SE Coupe gave way to the 280SE Coupe in 1967, and remained in production in that form until 1972.

In 1969, the new 3.5-litre V8, also fitted to the 280SE/SEL 3.5 saloon found its way under the elegant coupe and cabriolet bodywork, creating the most desirable variation of the breed. It was expensive, with a 25% higher list price than the 280SE Coupe and Cabriolet, but it was also achingly desirable given the punch and smoothness of the new power unit.
