Top 10 cars sold at Silverstone Auctions' NEC sale

Auction records tumbled as a 1980 Mk2 Ford Escort RS2000 Custom sells for £97,875 and a 1996 Ford Escort Cosworth Lux went for £91,125 at this year’s NEC classic motor show sale.

A total of £3.6m changed hands during the auction with 67 per cent of the lots on offer finding new owners at the Silverstone Auctions sale on November 11-12.

1973 BMW 3.0 CSL

The BMW 3.0 CSL (Coupé Sport Lightweight) was a special version of the six-cylinder BMW E9 pillarless coupé produced in lighter gauge steel with aluminium doors, bonnet and boot lid, plus chrome arch extensions for its wider alloy wheels. Introduced in May 1972, 1000 were built to homologate the BMW Coupé for the Group 2 European Touring Car Championship and BMW UK took 500 in RHD with most of the standard CS's luxury equipment refitted.

This example been the subject of a two-year restoration between 2013 and 2015, following a period of storage from 2008. Work undertaken includes: bead blasting of the body with any repairs being carried out using BMW panels, rustproofing of the body using Dinitrol, a comprehensive engine overhaul by Corry Engineering, retrimming of the interior using new Scheel seat materials and new carpets, and an overhaul of the braking system. The car has also been painted and the interior refurbished.
