1971 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL AMG - ‘The Red Pig’

Despite its negative connotations, ‘The Red Pig’ (or ‘Roten Sau’, in German) was actually a term of affection for the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG. The 1971 saloon was the first AMG car to be tested under race conditions, four years after AMG was founded, and proved to be an instant success.

Powered by a 6.8-litre V8, with 420bhp, the mighty Pig was entered into the 24 Hours of Spa and scored a maiden class victory, while also finishing second overall. Sadly the original car was sold in the mid-1970s and was never seen again, but Mercedes-Benz has recreated the original in 2006 with this fine replica.
