Top 10: Cars from the BMC and Leyland day
An impressive and rather fitting turnout of 30 Rover 800s converged on the British Motor Museum at Gaydon to celebrate the model’s 30th anniversary. But it was just part of a day packed with BMC, BL and Austin-Rover eye candy. If you’re not a fan of the British car industry’s darkest hours, then look away now. Rover Montego 1.6L
Pinpointing why this was one of our favourite cars of the show is difficult, as it’s a rather humdrum example of an even more humdrum car, in a rather basic trim level and a minority interest colour. Indeed, we think it’s the fact that a Lynx Bronze Rover Montego 1.6L survived at all is what peaked our interest. By this stage in its lifecycle, the Montego was far from where Rover wanted to position itself, to the point that the Monty never actually got to wear the Viking badge, but it was a necessary evil to keep the fleet orders pouring in. This one, then, with just 21,000 miles on the clock, should never have made it into private ownership, let alone be this loved and cherished.
