Fiat Punto GT

With the hottest Uno doing well for Fiat throughout the 1980s, you’d expect the Italian giant to come up with a suitable replacement when the new Punto range arrived in 1993. And that’s exactly what happened when the GT Turbo was unveiled, employing an updated version of the Uno’s turbocharged 1.4-litre powerplant – with an impressive 134bhp on tap.

The result was a top speed of 120mph, with the 0-60 dash in less than eight seconds – plus all the fun of good old-fashioned turbo lag along the way. Excellent, original examples are now getting scarce, although no more than £1500 should get you behind the wheel of a good one.
