Top 25: 21st century classics
We might only be fifteen years into the 21st century, but there’s no shortage of models already viewed as modern classics by enthusiasts.
Amazingly, despite this being a top 25, there are still plenty of New Millennium cars that we’ve had to leave out, including Ford’s Focus ST, Renault’s Clio V6 RenaultSport and Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution VIII. But don’t worry, as we reckon there’s plenty here to entertain most fans of up-and-coming classic metal.
MG TF (2002-2005)
When the Phoenix Consortium acquired the Rover Group from BMW in 2000, it inherited the MGF, remodelled two years later into the surprisingly different looking MG TF. The newcomer was quite obviously MGF-based but with a sleeker, more modern looking front end and coil-sprung suspension in place of the previous Hydragas set-up. As before, the TF featured 1.8 K-series power, ultimate version of which was the VVC version with almost 160bhp on tap. The TF died when MG Rover went bust in 2005, but reappeared in 2008 under Chinese ownership – leading to an extra 900 cars being assembled at Longbridge.
