A major step forward when the wraps were pulled off this car in September 1982. Light weight and superior aerodynamics were allied to the efficient five-cylinder engine to produce an executive car with unrivalled pace (it could outrun a Rover 3500) and economy for its size. Significant for being the first production saloon with opening flush glazing, which helped achieve its record-breaking 0.30cd.

Under the skin, it was much the same as the old Audi 100. So it shared that car's longitudinally mounted five-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive layout, so all very efficient. Huge cabin, soulless interior and terrible ventilaton - so air conditioning was needed. But a genuine step forward, leaving the opposition trailing in its wake. Despite its advanced specification, the Audi didn’t quite earn its premium pricing here in the UK. It’s an interesting classic despite anodyne driving experience.

"I am after - among many other spare parts - a driver's side wing mirror (right-hand side) for a 1986 Audi 100CD but I am having significant difficulty finding one. Have you any suggestions?"

eBay and breakers' yards are your best bet, but you could also try the Club Audi (http://www.club-audi.co.uk) to see if any of their members have a spare. Keep an eye on the classified adverts or you could also try an autojumble.

Where can I get parts for my 1990 Audi 100 Avant?

"I am having difficulty in sourcing a track control arm for my 1990 Audi 100 Avant. I have received parts from two different suppliers but neither has been correct. Could you recommend a supplier?"

Adrian Bradley at OEM And More says, '1990 was the change from the Mk3 Audi 100 C3 to the Mk4 Audi 100 C4, with different arms fitted to each model. The early cars have a track control of 385mm long and later 392mm: early arm (Audi 441 407 156) late arm (Audi 4A0 407 152).
