British Motor Museum opens after £1.1m refurbishment

Published 15 February 2016

The new-look British Motor Museum opened its doors to the public on Saturday, 13 February, following a £1.1m refurbishment. Previously known as the Heritage Motor Centre, the museum now boasts more interactive displays and a new collections centre.

Visitors now access the museum via a new entrance, which leads in to a gallery. Areas of the museum are now themed, with zones for concept cars, royal cars, motor sport, plus motors from film and television.

The cars are also displayed in more innovative ways, with Land Rovers scaling a makeshift mountain and concepts sat on giant, Matchbox-style boxes.

The new Collections Centre allows visitors access to an additional 250 cars from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and the Jaguar Heritage Trust.

Displays are now themed in zones with more space to see the cars.

Tours of both the Museum and the Collections Centre will be available daily and can be booked at no extra charge on arrival, (subject to availability) and all half-term family activities are also included in the admission price.

The new British Motor Museum looks great. The Heritage Centre was good anyway, but it did feel like some of the cars were crammed in. This looks like there's a bit more space to apprecaite the exhibits.

We were there on the opening day. It was our first visit and will not be our last. I could spend hours in the cinema watching those old films.

The cars themselves were very interesting, the Rover SD estate, the Jaguar XJ40 estate and the Daimler Corsica just show what BL could have done. Volvo and Mercedes were enjoying success with their estates and convertibles while BL sat by the wayside. If only someone could have had the foresight to of put one or all these cars into production we may of still had a motor industry we could be proud of.

If you are thinking about visiting the museum I really recommend you do so and if you're really interested in cars allow your self a full day.
