Goodwood Revival victory for future F1 star

Formula One test driver Giedo van der Garde and David Hart provided the highlight of the final day of the 2014 Goodwood Revival as they took victory in the RAC TT Celebration race.

Dutchman van der Garde is currently a test driver for the Sauber team, but has been hottly tipped for future F1 success.

The pair, who fought off competition from £150m worth of rivals in their AC Cobra, were just one of a number of winners on Sunday as the ever-popular event drew to close.

But the most exiting of the weekend’s 14 races was the second part of the St Mary’s Trophy, in which the little Austin A40 of British Touring Car team boss Mike Jordan eventually saw off a pair of Jaguar Mk1s.

The racing cars were not the only ones to take to the track with more than 100 military vehicles from the 1939-1945 conflict lapping the circuit on Sunday as part of a tribute headed by Lord March.

Seventy-five years ago, the ninth Duke of Richmond aided the war effort by making what is now the Goodwood Motor Circuit available for the nation’s use. The result was RAF Westhampnett, a Spitfire base that made a big contribution to the eventual victory.

It's no surprise that Spitfire and Hurricane displays are a regular part of Revival entertainment, but this year the crowds were treated to a fly-past by not one but two Lancaster bombers – the second Merlin-engined aircraft visiting the UK from Canada.
